I & M Canal State Trail - Channahon to Morris

15 miles | Crushed Limestone | Easy, Flat

25302 W. Story Street, Channahon, IL 60410

This trail is a vision of Illinois’ waterways, past and present. Come walk along the I&M Canal, The Dupage, DesPlaines, Kankakee & Illinois Rivers, spotted by locks, dams, and even two ghost towns of Dresden and Aux Sable.

Grab your sunscreen and camera as you start your trek at Channahon State Park, taking time to explore a variety of canal structures and buildings that dot the landscape. As you cross over the Dupage river and head west, the trail becomes a path that runs between the I&M Canal and the Illinois River.

Along the way, make sure to hop off your bike in Dresden, a ghost canal town overlooking a modern lock and dam on the Illinois Waterway. A similar ghost town, Aux Sable, is now just a collection of canal structures including Lock 8, an aqueduct, and one of the two remaining locktender’s homes. Once in Morris, a half-mile detour east along Armstrong Street takes you to Evergreen Cemetery, where legendary Chief Shabbona is buried.

Nearby Attractions

Channahon (meeting of the waters) derives its name from its location where the Kankakee, DesPlaines and Illinois rivers meet. The Four Rivers Environmental Educational Center in Channahon stands at the point where the four rivers meet, and is a model of green architecture. Morris offers kayaking, views over the Illinois River at Wm. G. Stratton State Park and the Grundy County Historical Museum with exhibits on local history. The end of this section is at Gebhard Woods, which offers a campground for those that wish to extend their trip.
